Gothenburg’s main boulevard will be a string of green experiences

For around nine weeks in summer of 2016, Kungsportsavenyn in Gothenburg was adorned with pop-up parks. The parks lead all the way up to Götaplatsen and the statue of Poseidon, who did stand amid a green oasis.

Kungsportsavenyn, commonly known as Avenyn, is the main boulevard in Gothenburg. It runs south-east, from Kungsportsbron bridge, by the Moat (Vallgraven), all the way up to Götaplatsen. Götaplatsen square is probably the most familiar landmark in Gothenburg, and is dominated by the statue of Poseidon with its fountain.

The theme of the exhibition at Götaplatsen and the pop-up parks along Avenyn was green urban development. Building a compact green city that meets climate challenges will require careful and sustainable urban planning. The green elements of the city should be designed to meet social and ecological needs; these public spaces must contribute to healthy and diverse urban living, while also providing ecosystem services and rich habitats for plants and animals. For around nine weeks in summer of 2016 you did get inspiration and fresh ideas on this theme in the centre of Gothenburg.

Poseidon ruled over a green meeting space

The exhibition at Götaplatsen created a green backdrop and provide space for activities, relaxation and edible inspiration.

Green pop-up parks on Avenyn

Seventeen pop-up parks provided green oases along Gothenburg’s main boulevard last summer. The exhibitors who created the pop-up parks were organisations that are involved in various ways with green urban development and providing spaces for people to meet. They included landscape architects, other municipalities and private stakeholders at local, national and international level. This was an opportunity to find useful inspiration and handy tips for creating a green and sustainable city, for individuals and communities. Garden lovers, architects, home-owners, balcony owners, adults and children all found something of interest on Avenyn last summer.
