A mature green oasis in the heart of Gothenburg.
For 170 years the Garden Society of Gothenburg has been an oasis of greenery in the heart of Gothenburg, a place to relax and be invigorated.
Today it is one of the best-preserved nineteenth-century parks in Europe, where rolling lawns, historic buildings and ornamental gardens featuring exotic and indigenous plants take you back to the golden age of horticulture. The sweeping borders and nineteenth-century atmosphere set the tone. In 1992 the Garden Society of Gothenburg became the first park in Sweden to be given listed building status for its cultural heritage.
Contemporary planting such as the woodland areas and the magnificent rose collection also give the park contemporary interest.
The Palm House, Gothenburg’s Crystal Palace
In the centre of the park stands the Palm House, like a glittering artwork in glass and cast iron. It was modelled on the Crystal Palace in London, and has been a popular destination since 1878. In an area measuring almost 1,000 square metres you can enjoy tropical warmth and exotic plants, including palm trees.
The five sections of the Palm House provide a good overview of exotic plants from around world, as well as a glimpse of the previous century’s sense of style, in contrast with our own. During Gothenburg Green World the Palm House was filled with even more green experiences, including exhibitions and performances in this fairytale setting.
